What is Mucormycosis or Black Fungus?

The Black Fungus or Mucormycosis is a serious but rare fungal infection caused by a group of molds called Mucormycetes. These molds live throughout the environment.

Is Mucormycosis or the Black Fungus contagious?

No. Mucormycosis or the Black Fungus can’t spread between people. So, it’s not contagious.

Who is prone to getting
Mucormycosis or Black Fungus?

Mucormycosis, or the Black Fungus, mainly affects people who have health problems or take medicines that lower the body’s immunity. The COVID-19 Second wave has seen a substantial rise in the number of cases of Mucormycosis or Black Fungus. Especially in patients who’ve recently recovered from COVID infection and have some pre-existing diseases that include but are not limited to the following:

  • Recently treated COVID-19 Patients
  • Uncontrolled Diabetes
  • Cancer
  • Undergone Organ transplant or Surgeries
  • Stem cell transplant
  • Neutropenia (low number of white blood cells)
  • Immunosuppressant Steroids use
  • Too much iron in the body (iron overload or hemochromatosis)
  • Malnutrition, Diherrea
  • Prolonged ICU Stay Patients

What are the Symptoms of
Mucormycosis or Black Fungus?

The symptoms of mucormycosis depend on where in the body the fungus is growing. Contact your healthcare provider if you have symptoms that you think are related to Mucormycosis or the Black Fungus.

Symptoms of Mucormycosis / Black Fungus include but are not limited to the following:

  • One-sided facial swelling
  • Headache
  • Nasal or Sinus congestion
  • Black lesions on the nasal bridge or upper inside of the mouth
  • Thick discharge from the eyes
  • Prolonged Fever
  • Toothache Jaw pain
  • Cough
  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath

Whom to Consult?

The first point of contact should be an ENT Specialist or an Ophthalmologist who can detect the disease based on specific tests and diagnosis

A multi-disciplinary intervention of an Ophthalmologist, ENT Surgeon, Microbiologist, Pathologist is required depending on the case.

Advanced infectious cases need to be seen in a multispecialty Tertiary Care Hospital with the intervention of a Neuro Surgeon, Oculoplasty Surgeon, ENT Surgeon and Maxillofacial Surgeon, where the patient will be admitted, treated and observed in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
