Mucormycosis, or the Black Fungus, mainly affects people who have health problems or take medicines that lower the body’s immunity. The COVID-19 Second wave has seen a substantial rise in the number of cases of Mucormycosis or Black Fungus. Especially in patients who’ve recently recovered from COVID infection and have some pre-existing diseases that include but are not limited to the following:

The first point of contact should be an ENT Specialist or an Ophthalmologist who can detect the disease based on specific tests and diagnosis
A multi-disciplinary intervention of an Ophthalmologist, ENT Surgeon, Microbiologist, Pathologist is required depending on the case.
Advanced infectious cases need to be seen in a multispecialty Tertiary Care Hospital with the intervention of a Neuro Surgeon, Oculoplasty Surgeon, ENT Surgeon and Maxillofacial Surgeon, where the patient will be admitted, treated and observed in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
